Electrotactile Display of Computer Graphics for Blind Final Report

چکیده
This report presents progress for both competitively-funded segments of NEI grant R01-EY10019, Electrotactile display of computer graphics for blind. The initial project period was 12/1/92–11/30/96, with a no-cost extension until 5/31/97 (Paul Bach-y-Rita, PI). The second funding period was 9/30/98–9/29/02, with a no-cost extension until 9/30/04 (Kurt Kaczmarek, PI). Progress in the two competitive segments will be separately discussed. Human subject accruals and publications are for both competitive segments.

Electrotactile Haptic Display on the Fingertips: Preliminary Results
Electrical stimulation of the sense of touch may be used to display pictorial information to blind computer users via a fingertip-scanned (haptic) touch tablet containing embedded electrodes. This might be particularly useful to users of systems with graphical user interfaces, or with drawing and layout software. Electrotactile (electrocutaneous) stimulation on the fingertip, however, differs s...
متن کاملMA1-2 Electrotactile Display for Integration with Kinesthetic Display
The goal of this study is to develop a haptic interface for dexterous manipulation. To achieve this, we proposed electrotactile-kinesthetic integration. Our electrotactile display presents natural touch sensations of objects. In addition, this display is so small that it is considered to not affect the moving range of fingers. The haptic interface for dexterous manipulation is realized by mount...
متن کاملGraVVITAS: Generic Multi-touch Presentation of Accessible Graphics
Access to graphics and other two dimensional information is still severely limited for people who are blind. We present a new multimodal computer tool, GraVVITAS, for presenting accessible graphics. It uses a multitouch display for tracking the position of the user’s fingers augmented with haptic feedback for the fingers provided by small vibrating motors, and audio feedback for navigation and ...
متن کاملForm perception with a 49-point electrotactile stimulus array on the tongue: a technical note.
Form perception with the tongue was studied with a 49-point electrotactile array. Five sighted adult human subjects (3M/2F) each received 4 blocks of 12 tactile patterns, approximations of circles, squares, and vertex-up equilateral triangles, sized to 4x4, 5x5, 6x6, and 7x7 electrode arrays. Perception with electrical stimulation of the tongue is better than with fingertip electrotactile stimu...
متن کاملElectrotactile Stimulation Based on Strain Energy Density of the Fingertip
The shape recognition of an object is important for dexterous manipulation by humans. Therefore, we have developed a haptic display that integrates both electrotactile and kinesthetic sensations to present shape information. However, the electrotactile display only presents the contact field between the object and the fingertip. Therefore, we propose a method of electrotactile stimulation using...
